When did you first start doing CrossFit? –
September 1,2012

What fitness activities were you doing before? –
Since elementary school I was an athlete; soccer, swim team, track and field, cheerleading, dance and tennis. After high school I attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) and was a member of the Track and Field team. My specialty was shot-put and hammer throwing. I dabbled with javelin and discus whenever coach made me! College athletics is a huge commitment, of daily practice lasting as long as 4 hours. My first year I was terrible!! As a walk on to the team I hadn’t practice over the summer nor conditioned myself for the whopping that was about to happen. Not to mention, in case you’ve never seen a “really good” college women’s thrower, they are not 5’4 145lbs LOL more like 6’ 235lbs. Needless to say I spent the first year learning all new throwing technique and Olympic weight lifting…I had a lot of ground to make up with the competition. Luckily Coach believed in me and kept me on the team for the following 3 years. My senior year of College (2004) I placed 3rd in our conference in the women’s hammer throw. It was awesome! I earned myself the title “lil’ powerhouse”. Upon graduation it was terrible finding somewhere to workout. Really who walks into a “globo-gym” and Olympic weight lifts? So I did my best at YMCA’s and local gyms. Trying to find what it was that motivated me to stay fit. I trained for a half-marathon and full-marathon and completed them (pretty crazy for a college hammer thrower to turn marathon runner…ruined my college motto of “I’d rather throw and eat, then run and puke”. Finally in 2010 I decided to take the certification test to become a personal trainer. So I did and I used that certification for my job in NC. But, nothing ever came close to the real workouts from college, something I pretty much hung-up as “those were the days”.

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout. –
I GOT THIS !

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family? –
My top five examples:

  1. I started with how to grip the rope, to being able to 15ft rope climb.
  2.  I had to use mats and bands to do hand-stand push-ups and pull-ups, to being able to do deficit HSPU and butterfly pull-ups.
  3.  I went from wellness level to competition level
  4. I have lost 15lbs and almost 6% body fat, thanks to the Paleo challenge.
  5. Overall my back bothers me less and I am able to lift heavier weight over longer periods of time.

What do you like most about CF? –
It’s more than a place to workout, its having teammates again. It’s okay to be strong and not feel confined to treadmills and dumb bells.

What is your favorite CF exercise? –
Pistols

Your least favorite? –
Double Unders

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? –
Being able to transition to competition workouts within 4months of starting CrossFit.

What CF goal are you working towards? –
The Games! LOL
But before that, attaining the level of fitness I know I am capable of so that I can compete. Since the first day, its never been a question of “if I can do this”, but how long will it take to get there.

When did you first start doing CrossFit? –
 August 2012 / 40th birthday present

What fitness activities were you doing before?
Prior to crossfit I did spin, road biking and mild weight lifting. Was medically required to reduce activity in Dec 2010 due to postoperative pericarditis. So almost 20 months of inactivity.

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout.
I…..PASSED….OUT!  Seriously…midway through my first ignition WOD I vacated Jim’s presence to spend some alone time in the bathroom to run cold water over my head. And that was only pushups and sit-ups! Hard to believe that was only 5 months ago.

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family?
5 months ago I was 200 pounds and way over 33% body fat. Suffering the worse heartburn you can imagine. Over 20 pounds gone, and down to less than 17% body fat at the moment. Staying with strict Paleo has eliminated the heartburn. Pretty incredible in a short amount of time.

What do you like most about CF?
The fact that it pushes me to my limits every WOD, it’s always changing and challenging. I don’t think I’ve repeated a workout since starting.

What is your favorite CF exercise?
No specific exercise. I actually like them all. Not sure why but the “300” workout I love! It was the first WOD where I felt like: “hey, I can actually do this!”

Your least favorite?
Still trying to conquer those Double Unders!!!

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of?
The fact that my family is involved. I love to see that we’ve found an environment where although our goals may be different, we are still learning a healthy lifestyle together. Oh, and strict handstand pushups!

What CF goal are you working towards? –
Just to get better everyday. That’s all I can ask. I found myself today reading the competition workout with a little thought of: “I wonder if?”   Time will tell.

Firebreathers!!!

Thursday, 11 October 2012 18:46 Written by Jennifer 0 Comments

Congrats to our Firebreathers of the Month!!!  Trish and Bill!!!  Read below to learn a little bit more about our athletes of the month!!!

Trish:

When did you first start doing CrossFit? –I started around August 2011.

What fitness activities were you doing before? – Boxing, bootcamps, playing softball, Tae Kwon Do.

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout. – HOLY FILTHY FIFTY!

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family? – I have really gotten a lot stronger all around.  Before I started CF I never did real pull-ups or real weightliting.  I never would’ve been able to snatch 75lbs over my head, lol.  I have also seen a big improvement on the softball field.  I’m hitting balls farther than I ever have and it’s awesome.

What do you like most about CF? – I like that it is fast paced and challenging as well as different all the time.  I have the attention span of a two year old, so keeping busy doing different things at the gym is a MUST.

What is your favorite CF exercise? – I’d have to say that my favorite CF exercise is the power clean.  Although, I really like double unders too…boxing habits die hard :)

Your least favorite? – My least favorite is running…of any kind.

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? – I think it would be my mas deadlift of 225.  I never would’ve believed I could actually deadlift that much.

What CF goal are you working towards? – I would love to one day join the “Muscle-Up Club” but htat may be a while…so a more immediate goal would just be to keep getting stronger and trying to build my endurance.

Bill:

When did you first start doing CrossFit? – I first began doing Crossfit a few years ago, but only recently joined En Fuego within the last year.  My experience between different CF gyms has been like night and day.  Needless to say, I am planning on being a part of En Fuego for a long time.  (as long as you don’t move gyms again)

What fitness activities were you doing before? – Basketball, Soccer, Running, Some general gym workouts

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout. – Overwhelming, Intense, Challenging

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family? – My endurance and strength have increased/improved.  My wife like my new rock hard guns.

What do you like most about CF? – I like the group atmosphere of the workouts verses individual workouts, timed competition, and how the WOD’s push me to perform the at my peak performance.

What is your favorite CF exercise? – Turning the wheel of the truck in to my driveway after completing a tough WOD.

Your least favorite? – If overhead squats were banished from the gym, I would not shed a tear.

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? – Besides being chosen Firebreather of the Month (Finally!) — My ability to complete more kipping pull-ups.

What CF goal are you working towards? – After tearing my Achilles, and being out of the gym for months, I am proud that I am getting close to my fitness level I was at before the injury.  With continued work and dedication (and support from my En Fuego Family) I will be surpassing my pre-injury self and competing in the Tough Mudder event in December.

I wanted to say Thanks to everyone in the EN Fuego family for being great.  I really enjoy being a part of the gym and appreciate the good people around me.

Brooke!

When did you first start doing CrossFit? – July 2011

What fitness activities were you doing before? – mostly just running. I had run one full  marathon and a few halfs before starting CrossFit.

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout. – refreshingly different, exhilarating, and addicting!

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family? – greater muscle definition, increased strength and endurance, faster run times

What do you like most about CF? – there are several things that I like about CrossFit  but if I had to pick a few they would include the positive attitude of the girls at the 9 am class ( and the few lone guys) who have become friends, the constantly varied workouts that never allow for routine or boredom to set in,  and that EnFuego, for me offers the perfect balance between getting a disciplined, hard core workout while still making room for fun in the process.

What is your favorite CF exercise? – pull ups, pistols and cleans

Your least favorite? – back squats

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? – all of them really but improving my strength and ability to lift weights I would have to say is the most notable accomplishment.  Since starting CrossFit I have actually gained just under 10 lbs but have lost in inches and have never felt better.

What CF goal are you working towards? – stringing together double unders, knees to elbows/toes to bar.

Jason

When did you first start doing CrossFit? – I started crossfit in August 2011.

What fitness activities were you doing before? – Before crossfit I played baseball and would go to lifestyles.

List three words to describe your very first CrossFit workout. – Intense, challenging, confused.

What results have you seen since you joined the En Fuego Family? – Since I started crossfiting I have leaned out tremendously and also built strength in all Olympic lifts, while also improving my cardiovascular endurance.

What do you like most about CF? – When the clock starts to count down from 10 seconds.

What is your favorite CF exercise? – Double Unders.

Your least favorite? – Overhead squats, Squat snatches, Pistols. (Twinkle Toes)

What CF accomplishment are you currently most proud of? – 202 unbroken double unders in 1:58.

What CF goal are you working towards? – My main goals in crossfit are to be able to do all the Olympic lifts, and to feel like I get better every time I leave the box.
